Ovid: Nothing is more useful to man than those arts which have no utility.

In my opinion, art shares a key trait with baseball. It connects, the way the bat meets the ball, causing something more to happen. As in baseball, so in art—the value of the connection is determined by what the something more is. A homerun? Pop fly? Line drive to deep center field?

The connection occurs between the artist and the viewer or within the artist herself. The something more is likely to happen in a cognitive, emotional or spiritual field. Less obvious than left, center and right. And there is no umpire.
